Our Review of the X2Cycle Tandem Rack trail-a-bike

The X2Cycle Tandem Rack looks and functions like any standard rack system mounted over the rear wheel of a bicycle, allowing you to strap down and carry a cooler or basket while you ride—but it also provides a really unique function for families who enjoy lengthy bike trips. If you've ever wanted to head to the trails for a ten mile ride but your child pooped out after the first two, you'll understand the need for an innovative device like the Tandem Rack: you can "tow" a rear rider without the need for a new chain configuration, hours of mechanical manipulation, or an expensive trip to the bike repair shop. The Tandem Rack is also designed to disconnect should one rider or the other lose control of their bike, assuring that you both don't go down together in a crash.

How does the X2Cycle Tandem Rack Work?

Beneath the hard plastic top of the X2Cycle Tandem Rack is a telescoping lightweight aluminum tube. This retractable, high-strength pole connects the back of the lead bike to the handlebar of the rear bike, allowing the leader to pull when steep inclines or fatigue render the rear rider unable to keep up the pace. So rather than give up long before you've had a satisfying ride, you can keep pedaling for as long as time permits. You'll also get a better workout during your ride thanks to the added resistance from pulling the ike. Therear b end result is a more satisfying biking experience for the whole family.

I've never seen anything like this before. Is the X2Cycle Tandem Rack safe?

Upon first glance the Tandem Rack does look a bit odd, and may even appear to be unsafe - but the connection system of the Tandem Rack's Universal Receiver and connecting bracket are designed with rider's safety in mind. For the lead bike, there is an "out of alignment" release mechanism that will detach the connecting pole automatically if the rear rider swings too far to the left or right. And for the rear bike, a steel ball-joint system connects the pole to the handlebars. This simple device will automatically release the bar if either bike tilts too much, and allows a rear rider on a much smaller bike to ride along with bigger bikes. Either way, both riders are covered in the event of a crash, and neither bike will be able to take the other down. In addition, 6" dampening springs at either end of the pole prevent jolting take-offs or abrupt stops that could cause a wreck; giving both the lead and rear cyclists a smooth and stable ride.

The Tandem Rack is mounted beneath the seat of the lead bike via X2Cycle's Universal Receiver, which comes with the purchase of the Tandem Rack. This Receiver attaches to the bike with a clamp and screws, and allows you to connect or remove the Tandem Rack and X2's other accessories (such as the double Bottle Carrier or the Child Trainer) with the push of a single button.
